Welcome to AP Art & Design

(2D Portfolio/Drawing Portfolio)

Students will create up to fifteen original works based on a "sustained investigation" that explores a big idea or essential question of their choice. Record keeping through sketchbook journaling and research is required, and will also be graded.

During their sustained investigation, students will be experimenting with new techniques and revising their work. The ultimate goal is to create works that show a complete synthesis of ideas, visuals and materials.

Students may choose to focus on either drawing or 2D design for their sustained investigation and their AP test submission. A drawing portfolio focuses on the elements of art, mark making, line, surface, space, light and shade and composition. Drawing (analog and digital), painting, printmaking and mixed media work are all acceptable mediums for submission.

A 2D portfolio focuses on the principles of design and elements such as layer, form, space, color, opacity, connection, juxtaposition and hierarchy. Graphic design, digital imaging, photography, collage, fabric design, weaving, illustration, painting, printmaking and mixed media are all acceptable for submission. Writing about the artistic process, and explaining artistic choices is part of the curriculum.

These fifteen pieces are the AP test. (Fifteen images will be submitted digitally, then five of those will be chosen and sent to the college board in real life. These five are called the "selected works"). Written statements are also a part of the test.
