Unit 1

The Elements of Art

total points: 20

The Elements of Art

What the heck are the elements of art? Think of them as the building blocks of art. Every single work of art that already exists, or that you will make in this class, will be made up of the elements of art. Learning about them will help you understand some of the vocabulary that we will be using throughout the year. Right now you just need a simple understanding of each. We will learn about some of them, in more depth, later on.

Step 1: (10 points)

You will learn what the elements of art are, and you will take notes on them.

(Written in your own words in your Google Doc. Just a few lines of notes for each one).

Here are some options for learning about them:

Check out the PowerPoint:

-If you just want to read about them:

-If you want to watch a video about them (with great visual examples):

------------------------*CHECK IN!! Done with your notes? Great! Now tell me it's done, and you are ready for your points!*---------------------------

Step 2: (5 Points)

-Check out these two works of art:

-Choose one.

-Look at it closely.

-Now tell me, do you see the elements of art? Do you see line, shape, value, etc?

Write a short paragraph on your Google Doc identifying at least three elements of art. Explain how the artist used the

 elements in the painting.

----------------------*CHECK IN!! Done with your paragragh? Great! Now tell me it's done and you are ready for your points!*------------------------

Step 3: (5 Points)

-Choose one element of art.

-Using half a page of paper in your sketchbook, draw anything you want as a way to illustrate this element of art.

-Please label your drawing, "Element of Art -(name the element)"

-No pressure, just have fun with it!

-Hint: Obviously, some of the elements will overlap. You might set out to do a line drawing, and you end up with shapes, or you

realize that you can't really make texture without value. It's not a problem. I just want you to be able to recognize the differences.

-Here are some examples...

                                                                                                                 Line & Shape

You have reached the end of Unit 1.
