Unit 2

The Principles of Design

total points: 20

The Principles of Design

Ok, so if the elements of art are the building blocks of art, then think of the principles of design as the ways we organize those building blocks on our paper or canvas. We don't want to just plonck our drawing, and everything in it, wherever, right? We have to put some thought into it. The principles of design help us with that.

Step 1: (10 points)

You will learn what the principles of design are, and you will take notes on them.

(Written in your own words on your Google Doc. Just a few lines of notes for each one).

Here are some options for learning about them:

-Check out a powerpoint PDF:

(it will show up in your downloads)

-If you just want to read about them:

-Or you can watch a great video with lots of examples:

Step 2: (5 Points)

-Check out these two works of art:

-Choose one.

-Look at it closely.

-Now tell me, do you see the principles of design? Do you see balance, emphasis, unity, etc?

Write a short paragraph identifying at least three principles of design. Explain how the artist used the principles in the painting.

           Left: "Untitled" by Georgia O'Keefe

Right: "Political Line" by Keith Haring

Step 3: (5 Points)

-Choose one principle of design.

-Using half a page in your sketchbook, (the other half of the elements of art drawing) draw anything you want as a way to

illustrate this principle of design. Make sure you label your drawing, "Principle of Design-(name which one)"

-No pressure, just have fun with it!

-Hint: Again, obviously, some of the principles will overlap.  It's not a problem. I just want you to be able to recognize the

 differences. :)

-Here are some examples...

Balance

Repetition & Rhythm
